Vietnamese tourist left in tears after begging for refund at Sim Lim Square Singapore

the shop is closed....

What was supposed to be a happy vacation for a Vietnamese tourist turned into a nightmare, as he was left in tears over the weekend after trying to get a refund for an iPhone 6 from Sim Lim Square shop MobileAir.
According to a report in Lianhe Zaobao, the Vietnamese tourist was a factory worker with a monthly income of $200 and had saved up for months to buy an iPhone 6 for his girlfriend’s birthday.

He was in Singapore for a holiday with his girlfriend when he received information that there was a ready stock in Sim Lim Square. He excitedly went to the shop and paid $950 cash on the spot. To his surprise and dismay, he was asked to pay another $1,500 for a warranty package before he could leave with the phone.

He then begged for a refund and even went on his knees, only to be laughed at by MobileAir employees, according to the Chinese-language paper. His girlfriend finally decided to call the police, despite the staff saying that they would retract the offer of a $600 refund if she did so. In the couple’s entire ordeal, no passers-by stepped in to help them.

Subsequently, the police arrived and officers from the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) were called in. The couple was ultimately refunded $400, which the tourist said he accepted because he had to return to Vietnam in two days and wasn’t sure if CASE could help him get back a full refund. The tourist went home Monday afternoon.

Chinese tourist count her coin for 3 hours

This comes after MobileAir recently made the headlines for refunding a woman $1,010 in 18kg worth of coins, including one-cent and five-cent coins. That incident had also prompted CASE to launch an investigation on the complaints that it has received against the shop this year.

Beautiful Ethnic Uyghur Model Gul Nazar Takes the Stage in China

There are countless attractive women in this world, most of who can be broadly divided into two categories: the super cute who make your heart melt and the stunningly beautiful, who you can’t help but think must be the magnum opus of some divine creator.
Gul Nazar (古力娜扎), a 19-year-old ethnic Uyghur model and actress whose beautiful clear skin has earned her the nickname “The Uyghur Venus,” definitely falls in the latter category.

Gul Nazar was born and raised in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, home to the largest population of Uyghurs, a Central Asian ethnic minority group that has come under the international spotlight in recent years after protesters resorted to terrorism in their fight for Uyghur independence.
She comes from a very traditional Uyghur family and could neither speak nor write Mandarin until she was 8 years old.

In an interview with local media, Gul admits that her mother wishes for her to quite modeling and live a normal life.
But the industry wouldn’t dare let a girl this beautiful get away: Gul was scouted when she was 16 and began modeling part-time while attending high school. Struggling to make a break after graduation, she retired from the modeling world until a year later when she decided to apply to the Beijing Film Academy, which has produced a number internationally-recognized alumni such as actress Zhao Wei and director Chen Kaige.

Chinese media, ever the sucker for a “cute ethnic minority girl makes it big” story, followed Gul’s progress with anticipation.
Luckily, she passed with flying colors and made her TV drama debut soon after enrollment.

Most recently, Gul has landed the secondary lead role in upcoming Chinese drama Scar of Heaven.
While still just a fledgling actress, we know this is one face that we wouldn’t mind seeing more of and we hope that “the Uyghur Venus” will be able to make a name for both herself and her people.

“No one sleeps in her class!” Internet goes gaga for gorgeous Chinese science teacher

Meet Ms. Deng Yuanyuan (鄧媛媛), the stylish, beautiful Chinese biology teacher who’s been sending shockwaves across the internet in the past week. Looking just as at home in the classroom as she would gracing the cover of a fashion magazine, Ms. Deng has reportedly become the envy of Chinese students everywhere. Join us after the jump for a look at this modern career woman!
Ms. Deng, the goddess of Jinlin
According to Chinese media, Ms. Deng is originally from Sichuan Province, China. She currently teaches at a middle school in Jinlin City, the second-largest city of Jinlin Province in Northeastern China (right above the Korean Peninsula). Chinese educational law mandates nine years of compulsory education for students, however differences in the terminology of “middle school” between Chinese and Western institutions mean that we’re unclear about exactly which grade levels Ms. Deng teaches. We do know that she was hired at this current school in 2012 and is acknowledged by students and staff alike as a veritable “goddess.”

  • No slacking during class!
At approximately 180 cm (5’9”) tall and with her long, straight hair, we almost couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw the following photos of Ms. Deng helping her students conduct science experiments with microscopes and beakers. Also, is that mini-skirt part of her typical teaching attire? It looks more like something we’d see a model at a motor show wearing. No wonder it’s said that none of the students ever doze off during her class…

  • Brains over beauty
But don’t you dare chalk up Ms. Deng’s success to good looks alone! Her looks may have caught the attention of the online masses, but in the words of her own students, “The reason for her popularity isn’t just because of how beautiful she is–she’s really good at explaining things, so don’t get the wrong impression!”
We guess that makes her both a professional at teaching and a professional at stealing our hearts.

Photographs Of Japan’s ‘Rice Paddy Art’ Amazes Netizens

Netizens are amazed by a new trend in rural Japan, known as “rice paddy art”.
“Rice paddy art” is large-scale art made using different strains of rice plants to create a picture that is often viewed from above, requiring a huge effort to co-ordinate and maintain the fields.
The art is becoming so popular, that apparently there are now specific bus tours for tourists eager to catch a glimpse of these magnum opuses.

It is quite surprising that no chemicals are used as colouring agents, since the pictures and words are created using the colourful leaves and ears of grain of ancient strains of rice in purple, yellow, green, red and so on.

Teacher Arrested For Putting His Semen In Woman’s Lip Balm

Sakaiminato Division police arrested Nakaoka Atsushi (38; from Yonago), a supervisor at the training and development division of the Tottori Prefecture Education Committee Centre. According to police, Nakaoka admits the charges.

Both the police and education committee state that until March this year, Nakaoka had been working as a teacher at the prefectural Sakai High School, and was an acquaintance of the woman. Nakaoka has a wife and child, and it is taken that there was no sexual relationship between him and the victim.

The reason for Nakaoka’s arrest was because he is alleged to have smeared his own semen in the woman’s lip balm so that she could no longer use. The incident occurred at a school in the western part of Tottori prefecture between December 28 and January 7 last year. Police said that the woman came to the school on January 7, and went to use her lip balm, but when she put it on her mouth she didn’t feel right, and said “It felt strange”, and that was when she noticed that semen had been put in the balm.

In January, a person associated with the school discussed the matter with police, and Nakaoka emerged as the suspect from conversations with the woman and from DNA evidence. The Tottori Education Committee commented that “If the charges are indeed true, then it is a terrible disappointment. We will make an effort to establish the facts of the situation, and will seek a harsh punishment”.

Friends Kill Girl Over LINE Message, Dump Body In Mountains

Japanese netizens have been horrified by the news that a sixteen year old girl was effectively murdered by lynch mob over messages she sent on the popular smartphone application, LINE.

Since six out of the seven arrested in connection with the crime are still only 16, their identity is protected by the Japanese Juvenile Law, prompting many netizens to call for a change in the penal system

Japanese police search the mountain area where the victim’s body was found.

From Yahoo! Japan:

“We All Assaulted Her Together”: 6 Acquaintances Of 16 Year Old Girl Arrested On Suspicion Of Disposing Of Her Body, Hiroshima Prefecture Police

In the case where an unemployed girl (16) (Higashi ward, Hiroshima) has been arrested on suspicion of illegally disposing of a corpse for having abandoned a female body in the mountains of Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, which is assumed to be her former classmate (16), the prefectural police Kure division investigation team further arrested 6 people who were acquaintances of the girl on July 17.

Those newly arrested are Seto Taihei (21; unemployed) of Bessho, Yurihama, Tottori Prefecture, two 16 year old boys, both of whom live in Yonehama, Tottori Prefecture, and three 16 year old girls, all of whom live in Kure.
According to the investigation team, Seto denies the allegations, “It’s true that I went to the scene, but I didn’t dispose of the corpse”. The remaining five people admit the charges, with some saying that “we all assaulted her together”.

The six arrested suspects were complicit with the girl who was previously arrested, and are suspected of having disposed of a female corpse in the mountains of Tochibaracho, Kure, in late June.

Police say that the six disposed of the corpse at dawn, the woman got into the car with the girls in downtown Hiroshima, and went to the mountains. Seto is assumed to have been the driver of the car.

The girl who was arrested first explained that “We headed for the mountains in the car, and I got out of the car with the victim. I punched, strangled, and murdered her”. However, the girl and the victim did not hold driver’s licenses, and it was revealed that the girl had exchanged messages with acquaintances on the smartphone application LINE, where they had said “We’ll get arrested too”. The participation of the other six people surfaced during the course of the investigation.

Regarding her motive for the crime, the girl testified that “She had been slandering me on LINE”. On July 17, the girl started to talk about “assaulting [the victim] with her friends”. She said that there was also some money trouble between the two. Police are investigating the detailed course of events, with the prospect of pressing charges for murder.

Commuters Save Woman Stuck In Platform Gap By Pushing Train

One of the most viewed stories of today is quite literally an uplifting one, as busy commuters in the morning rush hour worked together to push a train so that a woman trapped between the train and the platform edge was able to escape unscathed.

The incident happened at Minami Urawa station in Saitama Prefecture, and the total delay to the line that morning? Only 8 minutes.
Netizens admired the passengers working together to save the woman, with many happy to see the “good side” of Japan make headline news for once.

From Yomiuri Online:

Passengers Push Train to Rescue Woman, Passengers Applaud

Passengers and station crew push the carriage together to rescue a woman who has been caught between the train and the platform. (9:19, July 22, at JR Minami Urawa station) Photo by Nobuo Shigeta

Around 9:15 am on the morning of July 22, a woman in her 30s who was about to get off the local train from Omiya heading to Isogo, fell through the gap between the platform and train carriage and got stuck at her hip on the JR Minami Urawa station on the Keihin Tohoku line.

About 40 people including passengers that was on the train or platforms and station crew pushed the train together to make a gap in order to rescue the woman.

The woman was carried to the hospital but did not have any apparent injuries.
According to one of our reporters who was on the train, at the time of the accident, there was an announcement by the station crew saying “There’s a person stuck.” The passengers of the train got off the train voluntarily.

The passengers then helped the crew, who were trying to push the train.
The woman was rescued within minutes and the passengers applauded.
According to JR East Japan, when the platform is straight, the gap between the carriage and the platform is about 20 cm wide.
The carriage that was in the accident was the 4th in a 10 car train, and weighed about 32 tons including the wheels.

There is a suspension between the chassis of the car, which has the wheel and the carriage, and when the train is pushed, the suspension stretches and the carriage tilts.
There was maximum 8 minutes delay to the Keihin Tohoku Line due to this accident.

Photo Of Student Inserting Public Tap Into Ass Causes Waves

Netizens have been shocked by the latest in a whole series of prank photographs posted on Twitter.

Over the past few months, prank photographs have been everywhere, with some not only attracting significant online attention, but also resulting in serious repercussions for those involved.

Now, a man thought to be a university student is at the centre of a scandal for inserting a drinking-water tap at a public park into his now public posterior.
Are these prank photos showing Japan’s lighter side? Or are they taking things a step too far?

In the never-ending series of prank pictures posted on networks such as Twitter, a photograph where a man who looks to be a student in his twenties takes down his trousers in a public park and seems to stick a water tap into his bottom was posted online. The poster tweeted “Getting filled up”.

The man in the picture is apparently a student registered with the law faculty of Kokugakuin University (Shibuya Ward, Tokyo). The photograph was actually uploaded on May 10, but the university’s office of student affairs explained that “Information about the picture only reached us in late August. We are in the middle of an investigation, which includes finding out whether or not the man in the picture is one of our students. Our response to the picture will be decided after this.”

It is possible that the act of revealing the lower half of one’s body in a public place can amount to the crime of indecent exposure. The location of the park where the photograph was taken is unknown. The man has already deleted his Twitter account.

The Shameful Reality of Tourism in Korea

The number of tourists to Korea has risen exponentially in recent years, fueled by Hallyu, or the Korean Wave. However, 40% of all tourists choose to not return to Korea. This report investigates the issue, and searches for some solutions.

Article from MBC:

The Korean tourism industry is growing ostensibly, while hiding its shameful reality.

Anchor: More than 12 million tourists visit Korea every year. The figure itself seems to show huge growth for the tourism industry in Korea.
However, only 40% of those tourists visit Korea again. In other words, 6 out of 10 don’t come back to Korea.
Is Korea treating foreign tourists well enough? Let’s look into the reality of tourism in Korea.

Illegal taxis and overpriced goods for tourists.[0:37]

Journalist: A Chinese tourist arrived at Incheon airport. As soon as he stepped out of the airport, a man approached.

An illegal cab driver: “Myeongdong, Myeongdong. 80,000 won for two people.” He took a van and there wasn’t a meter. It was an illegal call van.
When he arrived at a famous shopping mall, he couldn’t find any price tags on items for sale. He bought a summer jacket in one store.

The shop owner: “This jacket is 120,000 won. The price is so cheap compared to its high quality.” The Chinese man paid about 210,000 won for 3 pieces of clothing.

The journalist tried buying the same clothes in the same shop.

(Journalist: “How much is it?”)
Shop owner: “You can take it for 55,000 won, if you pay cash.” When the journalist bought the same clothes that the Chinese man did, the price was about 100,000 won cheaper.

Namdaemun market at nighttime. The Chinese man chose some knock-off brand name shoes.
The shop owner:“45,000 won. It is a real bargain.”
When a Korean man asked about the price, it was almost half.
The shop owner: “25,000 won. I can give you more of a discount.”

The Myeongdong area is brimming with solicitors. They keep following foreigners even though they say, “no”, or grab their hands or shoulders.
Yuan Siwei, a Chinese tourist: “I visited Korea since I like Hallyu. But despite my expectations, there are many things that disappointed me.”
To supervise illegal activity, a tourist police force was launched in October last year. In only 10 months, more than 900 cases of illegal activity were spotted.

One restaurant received more than 200,000 won from a customer who should have paid only 27,000 won.
Jeffrey, a tourist from Hong Kong: “I paid much more than I should have but the owner didn’t say anything. Later, I realized that I paid more.”
A taxi that turns off the meter when they have foreign customers is the usual subject of surveillance.

A foreign customer: “How much is it? 20,000 won?”
Due to poor treatment of its guests, the rate of repeated visits to Korea has been decreasing as time goes by, and is placed at the bottom among OECD countries.

Besides the low quality of restaurants, shops, and cabs, and there are even more problems.

Tourists also face challenges when looking for decent, affordable accommodations. [2:57]
At tourism’s essential core is a the need for a good night’s rest. This means high quality accommodations and a variety of options. Let’s look inside some accommodations in Korea. Reporter Jeon.

Reporter: I couldn’t find the place with the address information provided.
(Reporter)”Which building is it?”
The guest house owner:”I will come get you.” The place the owner showed me was a semi-basement flat in a terraced house.
Guest house owner: “We have been fully booked these days. There was someone staying in this room this morning.”

There was mold on the wall, a pillow, and a blanket covered with dirt. The owner asks 40,000 won for this room per night.
Another guest house is advertised as a modernized hotel on the internet.

(Reporter) “Has it been registered as a guest house?”
Staff: “Yes.”
It was really a sauna with a small portion illegally renovated. Only a bed could fit into a room so small. A foreign guest who believed the advert on the internet couldn’t hide his disappointment.
Tourist: “I found the cheapest accommodation on a hotel booking site. The place is so bad. There isn’t an air conditioner.”
1 in 5 foreign tourists who visited Korea last year stayed at a guest house. However, among the approximate 1,000 guest houses in Seoul, less than half of them have been zoned as a guest house.

Kyo-jeong Oh, head of the tourist police force: “Every year, the number of public complaints about accommodations has been reaching 100. Most of them are about a guest house. There is a need for more institutional support, such as revisions of the law.”

Demand is high for a unified quality assurance system. A look at Hong Kong. [4:24]
As these problems are worsening, the Tourism Board Organization are adopting a quality assurance system to guarantee the quality of accommodations or shops.
As you can see, there are four different systems, and even shopping malls run their own one. Too many systems are making tourists confused, and they are difficult to manage.
Let’s look at Hong Kong, where the quality warranty system has been running successfully. Reporter Lee.

Reporter: I visited a shop in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Recently the number of foreign customers of the shop has increased 20% more than usual. The owner explains that the shop has received a QTS(Quality Tourism Services)seal from the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Alexandra Mount, shop owner:“If people see the QTS sign, they see a shop providing a credible product as well as great service.”
QTS has been applied to shops, restaurants, and even accommodations. To be receive a QTS seal, shops must pass 16 tests for quality and service. Follow up for QTS-qualified shops is strict.
James Tung of the Hong Kong Tourism Organization:“To be registered and maintained as a QTS-qualified shop, a shop must pass many tests including a mystery shopper test.”

Hong Kong was once called “a heaven of imitation products.” After implementing the QTS system, Hong Kong’s image has changed, and income from tourism has increased nearly 4 times. It is thought that QTS, has been running successfully, and has brought the tourist industry of Hong Kong to a higher level.

In Korea, current quality assurance systems are failing. [5:50]
How about Korea? Police investigated a Korean restaurant for Chinese tourists only, qualified as an outstanding restaurant by Tourism Board Organization. In the kitchen they found food that had passed the expiration
date, and even leftovers that had been stored in the freezer.

Police: “3 years has passed (since the expiration date), 3 years.”
Since the shop was designated as an outstanding restaurant, there has yet to be any follow-up or management of the situation. The same problem is occurring with accommodations. Among 70% with quality credentials have been reported for not meeting the requirements of a quality guarantee. Organizations awarding these credentials can also not be trusted, as each accommodation, restaurant, and shop are given their credentials from different organizations.
Hong-cheol Shin, student in the department of Hotel and Tourism at Kyung-Hee University: “If the systems for quality assurance in Korea were combined to make one system, it would be great. Then foreigners visiting Korea can develop a sense of trust when making purchases.”
The government has decided to loosen many regulations in order to raise the number of foreign tourists to 20 million by 2017. However, people point out that the government should combine all the quality assurance systems into one, and run it well.

Why Do Married Couples In Japan Sleep Separately?

The way people sleep — with others, alone, in beds, on floors — varies widely from culture to culture. Now, a professor of territorial studies has published a book saying that Japanese married couples are unusual because high numbers of them sleep in separate places.
The article below, which was the most read article on Yahoo! Japan’s magazines section, discusses the phenomenon, pointing out that sleeping separately in Japan doesn’t necessarily mean that a marital relationship has gone sour…

From Yahoo! Japan:

Is It Only Japan Where Married Couples Sleep Separately? Japanese Couples Rare In The World

“Many Japanese married couples sleep in separate rooms, and this is seen as an unusual phenomenon even when compared with the rest of the world”.

Or so says a book entitled “A Place Where You Can Be Yourself: A Deeper Look Into Houses and Families As Seen In Territorial Studies”, which looks into Japanese married couples. When the author researched the way that couples slept in a Tokyo apartment building, it appears that a total of 26% slept separately. Furthermore, when limited to those couples over 60, the figure rises to 40%. For those still living with their children, “sleeping separately” levels at around 28%; however, when it comes to households where a child is now independent and lives separately to their parents, the the number of married couples who sleep separately is more than half, at 53%.

According to a survey carried out by Seniorcom that was aimed at people over 50, the percentage of couples in Japan who sleep separately was 40%. In neighbouring Korea, the figure is 19%, and in America it was 14% (2004). In the West, couples sleeping separately is considered the beginning of a divorce, and it is thought proper for couples to “sleep together” in the same room. The high number of elderly couples who sleep separately, and whose children are now living separately, in particular, is a rare phenomenon in the world.

And so why are there so many couples sleeping separately in Japan?
The author of the book, Kobayashi Hideki, a professor at Chiba University Graduate School and Faculty of Engineering, analyses that one reason there are a lot of couples who sleep separately is because there is a tradition of the mother sleeping alongside the infant, and that this is linked to why there is no sense of reluctance to going back to sleeping separately in old age.

Another reason, is that the divorce rate is not as high as it is in the US, where “one in two couples divorce”. In Japan, what is remarkable is that there are cases where even though, for example, a couple may be “finished”, the continue to retain their marital relationship without divorcing. That is to say that in Japan, there are a lot of “familial divorces” where although they are a couple in form, they are emotionally distant from each other.

In Japan, the divorce rate has been more or less 35% in recent years, but the middle-aged generation, where “familial divorces” are common, the number of couples opting for divorce are on the rise. In the past ten years, the number of middle-aged couples who have lived together for more than 25 years who then go on to divorce has doubled. When you look only at couples who have been living together for over 30 years, this number almost triples.
Couples have their own individual circumstances. But still, one strategy to make their marital lives better might be for couples to sleep in the same place.

Foreign Collection Of ‘Samurai’ Photographs Appear Online

This collection of old “samurai” photographs, apparently curated by a foreigner, have been reposted on Hamusoku.com, and are getting Japanese netizens talking.

The source of the photographs is not revealed, but for the most part they show a bygone age, albeit a slightly later period than might originally be assumed. Most of the photographs appear to be hand-coloured prints — most likely postcards for tourism purposes — and are were probably taken in the early twentieth century — apart from those of Mishima Yukio, that is.
Hamusoku netizens enjoyed looking at the collection — we hope you do too.
